The Church of Rainbows and Fluffy Bunnies

Prayer, some guy hanging on a cross, quotes from some old book, all that stuff about sin and salvation...who needs it? How depressing! Church is for socializing, seeing your friends, giving them a big hug, singing the "Hokey Pokey" song, hearing a funny and uplifting speech from the guy or gal up at the front, and then listening to pretty, new-agey music with your eyes closed. All this will lead to a vaguely spiritual feeling, that wonderful glow of caring and sharing...sort of like really good pain-killers for the soul.

Here ends the sarcasm. And the sad thing is, I've been to a churches similar to what is described above and in the linked article.

Oh you said it...(as did the blogger in your link)!!!...I left the Epsicopal Church because the only answer I would ever get to a query about traditional service was "we dont want to scare people off"...my immediate response was "those people need to GROW UP!!"

Hi Sharon,

It seems that some think that being "spiritual" means self-affirmation and having a warm, fuzzy feeling. These people need to realize that it's not about them...it's about God.

Susan, you wrote that "These people need to realize that it's not about them...it's about God." But how are they going to come to realize this truth if they are not welcomed into the church setting?

Jesus said that He came to "seek and save that which was lost." He did so by ministering to the needs of the lost, minstering and teaching where they were (physically and spiritually) and He did so by relating God to them by use of parables that contained images that they were familiar with.

We (Christians) would feel the same in a mosque as most non-churchgoers feel inside a Christian church. I'm not advocating altering the message to a touchy-feely "3 ways to improve your life" series, but the wineskin must be attractive for them to even taste the wine. Just a thought.

Hi Larry,

I agree that people should be welcomed to a church and that they should feel welcome. And I know that different people like to worship in different ways. I like the traditional liturgy and old-fashioned hymns, whereas others like a less structured service with more modern-sounding music. There's nothing wrong with that as long as Jesus is the focus of the worship. I just don't think the whole reason for a church's existence (worshipping God) should be watered down to make the church more appealing. If you play down Jesus, then what's the point?

If you care to look at the New Testament, you will discover that today's church is apostate by comparison. Therefore our understanding of it is out of whack. The NT church met in homes, and primarily had meals together. This meant that the poor and needy had a meal as there was no welfare in those days. The church was born in prayer and power Acts 1:8. So one might say that the church is all about knees, heart and stomach. I don''t see anything remotely like this in most of today's so called "church services".
