Drug Allergies

Well, I learned something new (the hard way) last night. I learned that if you are allergic to Motrin (Ibuprofen), then you will most likely be allergic to Aleve (Naproxen) as well. I'm okay...I took Benedryl for the reaction (I ended up having to take four over an hour and a half period). But still, it's an...unnerving experience.

I can relate to that feeling. I am allergic to codeine. Of course, the nurses never suggested through two deliveries that that could be the reason why I was nauseous and throwing up after I gave birth.... You get good pain meds after a C-section! It took feeling absolutely wretched on a Christmas Day after taking heavy-duty cough medicine to figure it out. That same Christmas we discovered our eldest daughter is allergic to sulfa and erythromyacin. Joy to the world! :)

Hi Barb,

I'm also allergic to sulfa and Amoxicillin (which means I have to stay away from anything related to Penicillin). I found out about the Amoxicillin when I had two wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago. I had been taking it for a week, and then I suddenly broke out in hives. The reaction to sulfa (again hives) happened after I stupidly spent too much time in the sun one afternoon while taking it for a UTI.

Wow, it only took my daughter one dose of sulfa to break out in hives! Of course she was young and small; that might make a difference. And of course it happened late at night, the time most of this stuff happens. I am serious when I say, I am thankful to God to live in a world with medicines like Benadryl.

Barb,

Me too! I always have Benedryl in the house and I always carry some in my purse.

I also am allergic to sulfa and penicillin (amoxicillin). My R.N.says they're the most common drug allergies. Weird.

Susan, Terri was using triple sulfa when she collapsed. She had some form of allergic reaction.

Maggie,

I hadn't heard about that...sounds like anaphylactic shock. That would certainly explain why her brain was deprived of oxygen long enough to cause that kind of profound damage.

I am not sure that it had anything to do with her collapse. She was using it in the form of a cream and she had a reaction and then discontinued its use.

So no, she did not go into shock from that allergy.

Maggie,

Thanks for clarifying that. I wondered if they had ruled out the possibility that she had a severe allergic reaction.
