I Hate Politics

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I've been really busy and really tired. Most of the news has been centered on the elections and politics. I agree with Barb: I hate politics, too. But, as Barb points out, we have to care about what happens because we are affected by it.

I'm very much a pragmatist. I'm not the type to refuse to vote for the Republicans because they are not perfectly pure on every issue. I realize that religious conservatives are supposedly not held with high esteem by people high up in the party. (Although, I will say that David Kuo has his own axe to grind as well, predictably scolding religious conservatives for concerning themselves with "silly" things like abortion and medical ethics while saying that they should be more concerned about the usual "social justice" stuff, which translates to more government.) I realize that the Republicans leave a lot to be desired when it comes to spending and other economic matters. When it comes to the war, I think that the Bush Administration needs to rethink their strategies and perhaps replace Rumsfeld with someone else.

However imperfect the GOP is, I will vote straight Republican, holding my nose in many cases. The alternatives are not acceptable to me. I'm not going to throw my vote away on some third-party nobody or by writing in some nonsense or by sitting at home.

You think the war is a mess now? Wait until the Democrats start running things. I mean, I do not trust the defense of this country or our military in the hands of the Democrats. Kerry's latest gaffe simply let slip exactly what liberal elitists think of our military. Believe me, the military knows what liberal Democrats think of them, the spin notwithstanding. And just reading the reactions of liberals when you try to get them to understand the Islamist threat shows me how deluded and unserious they are. They are happy to keep spouting those politically correct platitudes ("Only a tiny number of Muslims are violent extremists! Anyone who says different is Islamophobic!") and keep their heads buried firmly in their nether regions.

My prediction, for what little it's worth, is that the House will go Democrat and the the GOP will keep the Senate for now. Also, no matter what margin a GOP candidate wins by, expect the kooks to start in with the "fixed election" conspiracies. ("No, it couldn't be that people didn't like the Democrat candidate -- it has to be election fraud!") In fact, I've already started hearing this crap from the usual suspects. Unfortunately, we will never have normal elections again. The kooks will always be with us.

Comments

The local media has us set up for a big election fraud story. There's a new story practically every day on how the voting machines are not working properly, and also a big story on how many dead people are registered to vote. Good ol' Dennis Kucinich is on the case, however!

I agree with you that we'd be in big trouble if the Dems took power. Not only the war, but their communist/socialist agenda. Does such a large group of people really believe in all that? I suppose so. I mean, they can't figure out that "free" does not mean "free." Just let the government pay for it all! Um, hello, look at Europe! Not to mention mother Russia, or that "worker's paradise," Cuba.

Every time I hear "social justice" I run the other way. Honestly, I help people as much as I can already, who really need it. But therein lies the problem.

Hi Barb,

Wow, with Kookcinich on the case, I'm sure there will be many dead Democrats getting their votes tallied. I mean, really, why disenfranchize dead people! :-D

More seriously, when people try and do things to prevent fraud, like require a picture IDs (as at least my county in Florida does), the liberals whine that it "disenfranchises" voters. Get ready to hear this conspiracy theory being thrown around if the GOP wins anything: the Diebold voting machines were hacked! **rolling eyes**

The term "social justice" gives me hives, too. Every time someone starts bleating about "social justice", I check and make sure nobody has stolen my wallet.

Susan interesting post. I'm British I'm afraid so have little knowledge of American politics but being a Christian socialist do know a little about that and the social justice stuff I beleive in comes straight from the bible- afterall there it says that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven, furthermore it also argues that the real blessed are the poorest and meek not the wealthy- so not people living in houses in societies like UK and US. I was wondering whether if more people imitated the lilies of the field and gave up their possessions, deserted their husbands and wives and opened their hearts to God as Christ commands that would be a good idea. Just a question.

Hi Henry,

Thank you for your comment. Actually, "social justice" should not give us hives. But here in America, the term is pretty much removed from "taking care of the poor" and instead is used just before someone starts agitating for more taxpayer money (and therefore more gov't) to be thrown at a problem. And throwing more gov't money at a problem never seems to help. However, I think private charities can accomplish a lot more.

I believe that greed can tempt people away from God, but it is up to each wealthy person to resist that temptation. I'm not wealthy, but I do try and help people as much as I can by giving to charities. I know I can probably do better, such as giving of my time as well. We all can.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's up to each person individually to give and help the poor. It's not something that should be enforced by the gov't, which is what I think socialism does. What socialism does is it has the gov't do what individual people should be doing. And after all, where is the virtue in giving because you have instead of because you choose and want to?
