Pandora's (Music) Box

Hello there again. Yes, I'm still on kind of a sabbatical and yes, I still owe everyone that lengthy post I've been promising. I will post it eventually...I still need to do some fine tuning on it.

Until then, how about some music? I've been meaning to link this for a while...it's my Pandora station: LilacRose on Pandora. It's still a work in progress...I listen and add more artists as time permits. Not everything that comes up is necessarily something I would like. One time, it played a song by Loverboy (blech!) and I hit the "thumbs down" as fast as I could. Also, here is my Pandora profile page.

Meanwhile, my poor Live 365 station has been suffering from neglect. They now have more room for songs on my current package, but I haven't taken advantage of it yet. A few months ago, I took a few songs down and prepared to add some new ones, but I never got around to it. I will get around to it eventually...hopefully sooner than later. I have a whole bunch of good stuff I want to add.

I will also eventually change the songs in my Radio.Blog. There's some good stuff there right now, though...mainly songs by The Sugarplastic, who unfortunately are not yet included in the Pandora library (although I have requested that they be added).

Have fun and happy listening!

Update: Well, I was afraid this would happen...the Pandora station managed to embarrass me. This is why I prefer something like Live 365 because I can have complete control over what gets played. Anyway, I will keep working with the station and trying to decrease the possibility of it playing a crappy or offensive song.

Comments

I hope you don't like everything they play on there!! The third song that came up for me was called "My Girlfriend's Daughter." Some guy who's bored with his current girlfriend, but hey, her daughter is turning 16, and she's looking pretty hot. Blech.

Hi Barb,

Ewww...see what I mean? Yeah that would have definitely gotten a thumbs down if I would have heard it. That's the only problem with Pandora...it is supposed to pick music according to songs and artists you like, but often they are way off.

Ugh...now I'm really embarrassed. I guess I should have waited a while longer before posting the station. It still needs more work. Sorry about that! :-(

Hey Susan, no reason for you to feel embarrassed. I did think it was important enough to tell you mostly because I knew you wouldn't think much of that song either. I didn't want you to feel badly about it, 'cause I know it's not your fault.

I got frustrated with Pandora pretty quickly myself. I picked my favorite band as Stavesacre, and Pandora informed me it doesn't offer Stavesacre as an option, but wouldn't tell me why unless I turned off my pop-up blocker. All their messages seem to come in pop-ups. Pop-ups are teh evil.

Hi Barb,

I guess I kind of overreacted with the embarrassment yesterday...I've been kind of overwrought lately.

I get frustrated with Pandora's interface, too. I made it an exception with Firefox's and my firewall's pop-up blockers, but it still won't let me do certain things sometimes. And they still haven't added The Sugarplastic to their library yet. They said to suggest artists they don't have and so I suggested them. I got a form email from them basically saying , "thank you...we'll look into it". I still keep checking every so often.

I just went to Live365 to give your station some 5-star love. How great to hear Chagall Guevara again! And Pandora was servin' up some fresh Cardigans... yum. My ears thank you.

Oh, thank you so much Shatterglass! :-) I promise I will be updating the Live 365 station very soon. There's so much stuff I want to add. And, of course, it will always play Chagall Guevara.

I'm glad the Pandora station played some good stuff for you. (The Cardigans are great!) I've been spending some time with the station every day for the past few days giving thumbs up and thumbs down on various songs (lots of thumbs down -- no they are not playing Styx on any station of mine).

I really like your Pandora station! Saved it on my account!

My stations are pretty hit/miss, obviously with the better ones being the ones I've actually spent time "tuning." I've tried Live365 too, but it started to drive me crazy always signing on every time I used WMP, so I gave it up. Besides, I'm way too lazy to keep it maintained--Pandora's so much easier, with just the thumbs-up or thumbs-down. ;-)

Hi Beth,

Thank you! :-) I need to spend some more time with it, but it does seem to be playing better stuff.

The Live 365 stations are a lot of work...ripping songs from CD to MP3 (if you don't already have the song in that format), uploading songs, being careful not to violate the rules (such as not playing an artist however many times during however many hours). They have sideloads, which don't count against your space, and I use those when possible.
